The Shape of Water Oscar-winner Guillermo Del Toro will be returning to familiar grounds. Del Toro will be bringing the fable of Pinocchio, a once-dead project resurrected by none other than Netflix. He is slated to write and direct a much darker, adult-oriented take on the folklore.

The Mexican filmmaker's Pinocchio is going to be a stop motion musical rendition of a wooden puppet who desires to be a human boy. The film is set to set in a 1930s Italy when Mussolini ruled with an iron will and fascism was on the rise. Del Toro's films are not only magical stories of creatures but also seamlessly blend politics, so the political backdrop comes as no surprise.

Del Toro, who has previously worked with Netflix on the Trollhunters series, will be saddling with Patrick Mchale (Adventure Time) to write the script. He will also share directing duties with Mark Gustafson(Fantastic Mr. Fox). Apart from Netflix, Pinocchio will be co-produced by Del Toro, The Jim Henson Company, and ShadowMachine.

According to Variety, Del Toro has a special reverence for Pinocchio in his heart. However, he's not taken by other versions, especially Collodi's, as he finds them to be extremely repressive. He believes that Carlo Collodi's Pinocchio is a tale of the sin of disobedience and there's something that makes it particularly attractive.

Del Toro is a highly imaginative storyteller with a penchant for the grotesque, and necessary tenderness to humanize the grotesque. Del Toro is someone who worships his monsters, and his niche within the genre will undoubtedly bring something magical on-screen.
