A Japanese multinational has built a cane that has a built-in display that can show arrows to direct the user towards their destination.

Demonstrated by Fujitsu at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the ' Next Generation Cane ' is also able to sense whether it is being held, potentially sounding an alert or sending an email if it is unexpectedly dropped, the Telegraph reported.

The stick, which also has sensors that monitor heart rate, temperature and humidity, is connected to the internet and can be located online, potentially allowing a lost person to be found and directed to a nearby destination.

When used to look up directions, arrows indicate where the holder should head, and measure distance covered by GPS and the number of steps taken.

The revolutionary stick updates itself each time it hits the ground and vibrates when a turn is needed.

Although it is currently only a prototype, it has integrated GPS, WiFi, 3G and Bluetooth connectivity and can also receive pre-programmed routes from the internet.
